The Premonition

Have you ever had a premonition that something bad was due to happen? This is a true story built around a will-o'-the-wisp, a hired boy, and a fire. This happened in the year 1916 near Frankton, Indiana, when my Grandmother Lois was 16 years old.

The Scam

What would you do if you fell in love with someone who was simply pretending to love you and pretending to be rich? How would you feel if you discovered this was nothing but a scam? This is a true story that happened to my uncle the summer of 1958.

The Rag Man

The year was 1906. My Grandmother Lois was only six years old. While living in Terre Haute, Indiana, she had a terrible fear of the Rag Man and his threatening litany: "Rags, old irons, little girls, little boys. Rags, old irons, little girls, little boys. Come and trade my rags and old irons for little bitty girls and little bitty boys."

The Golden Pencil

A Civil War Love Story: Rich-girl Jenny dared to fall in love with poor-boy Bob. When her father threatened Bob with a horsewhip and her siblings with dire consequences for being the go-between, she enlisted the aid of her friend, Salome Ronk.

The Red Skies Of Orestes

The famous author of the 1976 book entitled ‘Roots: The Saga of an American Family’, Alex Haley, said, “When an old person dies, it’s like a whole library burning down.” My Grandmother Lois, born in 1900, was still going strong telling stories well into the 1990s. This was one of my favorites. It’s about the tornado that hit Orestes, Indiana, the day after Easter, 1922.
